Bowater Pulp and Paper Mill
Cured in Place Pipe Rehabilitation
Thunder Bay Ontario.
The
Bowater Pulp and Paper mill located in Thunder Bay, Ontario not only
supplies most of North America with their recycled paper products but
also exports to Japan and Korea. In September 2001, the primary clarifier
used for preliminary effluent treatment for mill operations was shut
down, drained and readied for repairs and maintenance. The project’s
scope involved the cured in place rehabilitation of three of the feeder
and circulation lines attached to the clarifier. The lines—1200mm,
750mm and 250mm dia.—all ran under the clarifier rendering them
difficult to access to say the least.
One
of the most unique installations of the three involved the removal of
a portion of the exterior wall from one of the adjoining pump stations
to allow access to the pipe length.
The second involved the installation of a 1200mm dia. tube that could
only be reached through an access excavation on the far side of the
clarifier. In all, the entire rehabilitation was completed in 5 days,
half the time allowed for the project.
